Austenitic Stainless Steel

SS 304/304L

SS 304/304L

SS 304/304L

  • It is still sometimes referred to by its old name 18/8 ,being 18% chromium and 8% nickel.
  • Good machinability
  • Excellent corrosion resistance in a wide variety of environments and when in contact with different corrosive media.

SS316/316L

SS 304/304L

SS 304/304L

  • Austenitic stainless steel with added molybdenum, which has good resistance to corrosion when exposed to sea water.
  • Also suitable for certain applications at high temperatures and oxidizing agents up to 900°C under continuous operation and 850°C under intermittent operation.
  • It has excellent forming and welding characteristics.
  •  Usually regarded as the standard “marine grade stainless steel”, but it is not resistant to warm sea water.

SS 303

SS 304/304L

SS 303

  • Austenitic stainless steel, however with less than 0,15% sulfur for improved machinability.
  • The machineable nature of Grade 303 stainless steel is due to the presence of Sulphur in the steels composition.
  • Whilst the Sulphur improves machining, it also causes a decrease in the corrosion resistance and a slight lowering of the toughness.
  • The corrosion resistance of grade 303 stainless steel is lower than that for 304. The toughness is still excellent as with other austenitic grades.

SS 321

SS 321

SS 303

  • Austenitic stainless steel stabilized with Ti, used similarly as SS 304L.
  • These grades are used because they are not sensitive to intergranular corrosion after heating within the carbide precipitation range of 425-850 °C.
  • A limitation with 321 is that titanium does not transfer well across a high-temperature arc, so it is not recommended as a welding consumable.
  • Have excellent forming and welding characteristics.
  • They also have excellent toughness. Grade 321 does not polish well, so is not recommended for decorative applications.

SS 347

SS 321

SS 347

  • Austenitic stainless steel stabilized with Nb, used similarly as SS 321 and SS 304L.

XM-19

SS 321

SS 347

  • Austenitic stainless steel of high resistance to corrosion and mechanical strength with addition of Mn, Mo, Nb, V and N.
  • It can be solubilized, for use in applications requiring high corrosion resistance, particularly in marine environments, and also hot rolled, in applications requiring high mechanical strength.

Martensitic Stainless Steel

SS 410

  • ABTN | ASTM | SAE | AISI: 410
  • Steel featuring high mechanical strength and moderate corrosion resistance.
  • Grade 410 stainless steels are general-purpose martensitic stainless steels containing 11.5% chromium, which provide good corrosion resistance properties.
  • However, the corrosion resistance of grade 410 steels can be further enhanced by a series of processes such as hardening, tempering and polishing.
  • Quenching and tempering can harden grade 410 steels. They are generally used for applications involving mild corrosion, heat resistance and high strength.

SS 416

  • ABTN | ASTM | SAE | AISI: 416
  • Corrosion resistant martensitic steel, similar to SS 410 with addition of sulfur for improved machinability.
  • Grade 416 steel is a free-machining stainless steel with a machinability of 85%, highest of all stainless steels.
  • Because of their high machinability and low cost, grade 416 steels are available in highly tempered, hardened or unhardened forms.
  • The corrosion resistance of these steels is lower than that of austenitic steels.

SS 420

  • ABTN | ASTM | SAE | AISI: 420
  • It has high corrosion resistance when hardened.
  • Grade 420 stainless steel is a high-carbon steel with a minimum chromium content of 12%.
  • Like any other stainless steel, grade 420 can also be hardened through heat treatment.
  • It offers good ductility in its annealed state and excellent corrosion resistance properties when the metal is polished, surface grounded or hardened.
  • This grade has the highest hardness - 50HRC - among all the stainless steel grades with 12% chromium.

SS 440C

  • ABTN | ASTM | SAE | AISI: 440C
  • 440C stainless steel is a member of the 400 series of stainless steels. It has the highest carbon content among them.
  • The standout properties of this type of steel are its hardness, mechanical strength and fatigue resistance. This combination of properties makes it useful in the production of cutting tools.
  • High-C martensitic stainless steel for higher hardness and addition of Cr for improved corrosion properties, primarily used in cutlery.
  • Due to its high carbon content, it does not have outstanding corrosion resistance, but it can still be used for applications that require moderate corrosion resistance such as surgical instruments.

Duplex and Super Duplex Alloys

Duplex (UNS 32205/F60/F51/1.4462)

Super Duplex (UNS 32750 / 1.4410 / F-53)

Super Duplex (UNS 32750 / 1.4410 / F-53)

  • 2205 (UNS S32305) is a nitrogen-alloyed duplex stainless steel, with a chemical composition containing 22-23% Cr, 3-3.5% Mo, and 4.5-6.5% Ni.
  • The high chromium and molybdenum content provide good corrosion resistance, and the overall combination allows this alloy to be stronger and tougher than most standard austenitic steels.
  • They replace austenitic grades especially in premature failure environments and marine environments.

Super Duplex (UNS 32750 / 1.4410 / F-53)

Super Duplex (UNS 32750 / 1.4410 / F-53)

  • Alloy 32750 is a super duplex stainless steel supplied in the solution annealed condition.
  • As a super duplex stainless steel, it combines the desirable aspects of both austenitic and ferritic grades.
  • The higher chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen contents result in a Pitting Resistance Equivalent number (PREN) of >41, providing pitting and crevice corrosion resistance superior to austenitic and duplex stainless steels.

Zeron 100 (UNS 32760/ 1.4501/ F-55)

Super Duplex (UNS 32750 / 1.4410 / F-53)

Zeron 100 (UNS 32760/ 1.4501/ F-55)

  • It’s a super Duplex grade material with a ferritic – Austenitic microstructure.
  • Compared to standard duplex steels, they are characterised by higher Cr, Mo and N content which increase resistance to corrosion.
  • It consists of 40-50% ferrite in annealed condition.
  • These alloys are particularly suitable for use in aggressive chlorides environments.
  • It is supplied in annealed condition.
  • The higher chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen contents result in a Pitting Resistance Equivalent number (PREN) of >40.
